Dancer Geeta Chandran presents Arangetram of Disciple Aditi Balasubramanian @ Chinmaya Mission Auditorium
Aug 13 @ 6:30 pm

Geeta Chandran

NATYA VRIKSHA presents Bharatanatyam Arangetram Performance by ADITI BALASUBRAMANIAN, Disciple of Guru (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran

Arangetram is an important occasion in the career of any Bharatanatyam dancer. After several years — decades even — of arduous training, when the Guru is confident that the disciple can sustain a solo performance, the Arangetram is announced.

The Arangetram thus is an honour to the Guru; a momentous rite of passage, it marks the first milestone in the disciple’s journey into the ocean of Bharatanatyam.

In the 25 years that she has mentored students at Natya Vriksha, Aditi’s is the 40th arangetram performance that Guru (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran will be presenting.

THE ARTIST: Aditi Balasubramanian

Born in 2001, ADITI BALASUBRAMANIAN started learning Bharatanatyam when she was only three years old. She came under the tutelage of Guru (Padma Shri) Geeta Chandran at the age of six. Under Geeta’s personal attention and guidance for the past nine years, she has explored diverse aspects of Bharatanatyam.

In 2010, Aditi first performed on stage (a Sur Das pad), along with fellow-disciple Arundhathy, on the occasion of Guru Poornima. In 2013, she performed in the Young Dancers Festival as part of the Natya Vriksha World Dance Day Celebrations. Besides stage performances, she has also accompanied her Guru in lecture-demonstration sessions.

In 2011, 2014 and 2015, Aditi and a fellow-disciple won the first position in the Bharatanatyam Duet Category at Bal Kala Utsav, a national talent festival organized by S.U.N.A.I.N.A (Society for the Upliftment of the National Arts of India). In 2015, she and a fellow-disciple also won the first position in the Bharatanatyam Duet Category at Sanskriti Pratibha Utsav organized by Alaknanda Institute for Performing Arts. Aditi has also won the first position in Classical Dance at the Talent Fiesta in The Mother’s International School every year since 2013.

In 2012, the Nandalala Seva Samithi Trust conferred the title of “Parijatham” on Aditi in recognition of her talent in Bharatanatyam. Aditi also holds a Cultural Talent Search Scholarship in Classical Dance, awarded by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Besides Bharatanatyam, Aditi has keen interest in music, calligraphy and painting.

Geeta Chandran

“Dance and I” by Aditi Balasubramanian

Dance has played an important role in my life. I started learning Bharatanatyam when I was in Lower Kindergarten. My parents tell me that whenever I would get even a few minutes of spare time, I would start doing my dance steps irrespective of where we were; once even in a restaurant!

Dance has given me many things — discipline, physical and mental stamina, an understanding of rhythm, a sharper memory, the ability to convey my emotions through gestures and expressions, and above all, huge happiness whenever I have successfully learnt a difficult piece! Dance can never be a hobby for me; it is an integral part of me.

Today, as I stand at the threshold of my arangetram, my first formal solo public performance, I am extremely grateful to God for bestowing on me this passion for dance; to my Guru for lovingly nurturing me, constantly guiding me and giving me opportunities; as well as to my parents for tirelessly supporting and encouraging me. I am determined to work hard, and strive for excellence and perfection in this great dance form.

Dance will always play an important role in my life!

—Aditi Balasubramanian
